Hamilton Counselling: The Basics

Individual Counselling in Hamilton

Do you have a hard time overcoming your struggles and finding happiness in your life?

I can tell you that you’re not alone, which is true, but that doesn’t make dealing with your issues any easier. Nor does placing undue pressure on yourself to find all of the answers.

Counselling is a remarkable tool in which a therapist works one-on-one with you in a safe, caring and confidential environment – and I am proud to offer this service to the Hamilton area.

Here are some examples of what I cover with Hamilton counselling clients:

  • Adoption Issues in Adults
  • Anxiety
  • Blended Families
  • Communication
  • Confidence
  • Depression
  • Family Conflict
  • Healing After a Break-Up or Divorce
  • Insecurity, Jealousy and Trust
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Self-Esteem
  • Sex and Intimacy
  • Sexual and/or Violent Trauma

This list is by no means comprehensive and if you are dealing with struggles and situations not listed here, please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information.

How Can Counselling Help You?

You may feel like there is no help and no escape –  but you’re here reading this, aren’t you?

Individual counselling is all about giving you the empowerment and tools you need to overcome your issues. I can’t fix what has happened or is happening in your life, but I can guide you to finding the strength you need to make significant and lasting changes.

And with all of that, you can experience other amazing benefits such as:

  • A personalized approach that fits your unique needs.
  • One-on-one attention.
  • The discovery of healthy coping methods.
  • Improvements in your relationships.
  • Taking back control of your life.
  • Progressing at your own pace.

Counselling has the potential to help you develop a sense of self-awareness that will help you take control of your life and face the situations that cause you pain and grief with strength and confidence.

Not only that, but individual counselling can also improve your physical health, help you develop empathy and provide you with life-long tools to face future situations.

So no matter if you’re dealing with something you consider trivial, or an event that has dramatically reshaped your world, you can stand to benefit in a significant way from individual therapy.

You were engaged and interested. You stopped and we talked about things that bothered me a lot in depth. You weren't just relying on a textbook or a theory, you were relating to me through your own similar experiences.

What’s Different About My Approach:

Many people are skeptical about therapy, often due to a bad experience with a disinterested therapist, in a stuffy office, with outdated methods. Don’t worry, you won’t find any of that here – you’ll have everything you need to be as mentally fit as you can be.

1. Modern, Effective Attachment-Based Therapy

Attachment therapy is a new type of therapy that’s turning conventional psychology wisdom upside down. For the vast majority of people, this means better results faster than with traditional methods by focusing on early attachment experiences and their relation to current thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

2. Normal, Down to Earth Approach

Believe it or not, some therapists aren’t boring and pretentious. I’ll relate to you, share what’s worked for past clients and we’ll talk like normal people. I’m not interested in putting a bandaid on your issues – I want to dig deep and fix the root cause of your struggles.

3. World-Class Expertise and Resources

In addition to counselling sessions with clients, I also produce videos, write articles, host a psychology podcast, and I’m the clinical director of Empire Psychological in Hamilton. To stay up to date, I take part in continuing education related to the latest in attachment therapy.

Are You Ready for a Change?

Counselling: Common Questions

How Does This All Work? How Do We Get Started?

The first step is contacting me to book a free phone consult. I need to have a general idea of what’s happening before I can provide you with feedback, and talking on the phone also gives us a chance to see if we’re a good fit before meeting for a real session. Use the contact form below to send me a message, and I’ll do my best to get back to you within 24 hours.

Do You See Clients On Evenings and Weekends?

Absolutely. Counselling sessions are available from 10 AM – 5 PM at my Burlington office, and evenings/weekends at both my Hamilton office and Stoney Creek office.

    How Often Are Counselling Sessions?

However often is necessary – it depends entirely on your needs and how much time you’re willing to put into working towards your goals. Typically, people come in weekly or biweekly. I’ll be able to give you a reasonable idea during our free phone consult. Contact me and we can set one up.

One Week I Want Counselling, Then I Feel OK. Can You Help?

Definitely. I see this often, and if this is you, the way to break this pattern is to go to therapy when things are good. When in crisis you want counselling, but when things calm down a bit you lose your motivation. This pattern will likely continue until you seek help during the positive phase of the cycle.

What Type of Counselling Methods Do You Use?

Attachment based therapy is the primary method used. It’s one of the newest forms of therapy and is also one of the most effective. Attachment is making waves in the field of psychology because of how effective it is for a variety of issues. I write and speak about it often on my blog and podcast.

Can Counselling Actually Help With (Specific Issue)?

I’ve worked with people in circumstances you probably wouldn’t believe. Everyday people, celebrities, blue collar, white collar, accountants, artists… all types of people, from all kinds of backgrounds, all over the world. It doesn’t matter who you are or what issues you’re facing, what matters is the effort you put in. The most successful clients I’ve ever worked with are those who are dedicated, put in the work, and do so consistently.

    What's the cost per session?

There are several members of my practice each with their own rates based on their experience, but you can expect to pay around $170 per session.

Is therapy covered by my benefits?

Benefits and insurance coverage varies from plan to plan. To find out if your plan will cover therapy, please contact me.
